Well, I smashed the crap out of my hand last night. Went down trying to catch a frisbee, and tried to push off the ground to get back up with my right index finger. Um, let's just say it didn't work.
Admittedly, it's not that bad. Nicely sprained, but I can still do most of the daily junk that I normally do. (Even if it reminds me every three seconds that it's damaged.)
It's amazing to me that I'm not hurt more often. As I mentioned last weekend, I've been playing Ultimate pretty regularly for ten years, and have only been really hurt once or twice. Okay, smashing my hand doesn't count as "really hurt", more as a minor injury. But only once or twice have I been hurt enough to have to stop playing. (And, both times, I ended up having to keep playing, due to a lack of available players.)
My first panic upon getting home was figuring out whether or not I could still play guitar. And, gracefully, that answer seemed to be "yes". (Of course, there's no telling yet if I can actually play an entire song without dropping the pick on the floor.)
I haven't mentioned it here yet, but I've been working on new recordings this week. Acoustic stuff, mainly. I have so many songs that I've written in the past five years or so that I've never really put down to tape, so I figure it's worth trying to develop them into something. So my plan has been to sit down and record as much stuff as possible in the next few weeks and see what happens.
The lesson of Once Every Never has been this: I have a lot of friends who are curious about my music but really aren't into indie rock -type stuff. And, heck, it's so much easier to record acoustically that it might actually motivate me to get more songs recorded. (Keep in mind that OEN was named that for a reason.)
So here comes a change of direction. A little, anyway.
The weird part - the kick pedal on my drum set broke a few months ago, and I'm too broke to buy a new one, so I'm trying to figure out what to do instead for percussion. I did a test version of "Time (Frame of Mind)" with maracas and a small set of bongos, and it somehow seemed to work. So I may get all experimental with this stuff.
I'm not sure how soon I'll have anything available. I'm notorious for recording music parts quickly, then spending a year writing lyrics. So this should be ready sometime in the spring of 2005. (Insert winking smilie here.)
